📧 “Harris on military civil rights” to Sullivan
Sorry, I can’t let this go; you can either run an (updated) opinion piece with the regular disclosures, or America can do a news story about it, which would take more time, etc. Saying it’s unfair to the Harris campaign is a straw man; Trump wasn’t CA AG or in Congress when the Trone letter was published.
I’m pretty fired up about this because withholding information from your audience, an untold number of whom may be members of military families, involuntarily disenfranchises them by keeping information from [w]hen that might sway their vote away from the campaign you’ve expressed concern for.
It dawned on me that keeping this information from public view might constitute an unlawful campaign contribution if there is any preexisting fiduciary support between you or America Magazine and Harris’ campaign.
I’d be willing to write an updated Opinion piece, but I would not accept payment so that nobody can accuse me of extortion. But after I hit send, I will be putting this email on my website so the paper trail is not obscured. I’ve also CCed other editors for transparency’s sake.
Hate me if you like, but I won’t help keep my community in the dark about their own civil rights and human dignity.
